Increases Total Alkalinity and pH in spa and hot tub water. Low Total Alkalinity causes pH to fluctuate wildly, shortens equipment life, and can cause skin and eye irritation while increasing chlorine consumption.

Bromine vs Chlorine: What's the Difference?
You might have heard of bromine as an alternative sanitiser to chlorine. Both are effective at killing bacteria and keeping spa water safe, but they work differently:
Chlorine (e.g., Iluka Purify)
- Action: Oxidises contaminants – destroys them from the inside out
- Speed: Fast-acting, kills quickly
- Stability: Breaks down faster in warm water
- Cost: Generally more affordable
- Byproduct: Creates chloramines (can cause odour and irritation)
- Reactivation: Cannot be reactivated once used
Bromine
- Action: Ionises contaminants – breaks chemical bonds
- Speed: Slower acting but lasts longer
- Stability: More stable in warm water
- Cost: Generally more expensive
- Byproduct: Creates bromamines (less odour, can still irritate)
- Reactivation: Can be reactivated with shock treatment
Why Iluka Uses Chlorine-Based Sanitisation
The Iluka range uses stabilised chlorine (SDIC) in Iluka Purify because it's fast-acting, effective across a wide pH range, and the addition of Borax helps soften water and stabilise pH. Combined with the natural Chitosan-based clarifiers in the range, you get effective sanitisation with a gentler, more natural approach to spa care.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Never Mix Bromine and Chlorine
This is extremely important: Mixing bromine and chlorine can cause a dangerous chemical reaction. Even trace amounts can react, and the consequences can be severe.
What Can Happen
- Exothermic reaction – generates heat, potentially causing fire
- Toxic gas release – both chlorine and bromine gases can be released
- Respiratory hazards – these gases can cause coughing, wheezing, and breathing difficulties
- Equipment damage – unpredictable reactions can damage spa components
